| SWmaps has been creating visually engaging editorial maps for the publishing industry for over a decade. Steve Walkowiak, (principle designer) began making maps as a production and technology manager at National Geographic Adventure magazine, and was among the first graphic artists to use the emerging technology of 3D digital elevation models (DEMs) and satellite imagery to quickly create accurate graphic maps to support editorial content for the publishing industry. He is a regular contributor to Military History magazine, where he creates original maps for each issue–illustrating a feature story on a major battle, war or other military-related subject. His map artwork has appeared in America’s Civil War, American History, Backpacker, Discover, Military History, LIFE, Men’s Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Newsweek, Shermans Travel, and World War IImagazines, as well as numerous books.
